Accessibility

We want every family to be able to use this website. That includes people who use a keyboard instead of a mouse, people who use a screen reader, people who magnify the screen, and people who need larger text or less movement on the page.

    What we are aiming for

We are working towards WCAG 2.2 level AA. That is the standard most public organizations in Canada use, and it is the one we hold ourselves to.

    Where we are today

We are not all the way there, and we would rather tell you that than claim otherwise.

Here is what we have done and checked:

    • Every photograph and graphic has a text alternative, and the decorative marks are correctly hidden from screen readers so they do not read out clutter.
    • Each page is built with proper headings and page regions, so a screen reader can move through it in a sensible order.
    • If your device is set to reduce motion, the moving parts of the pages stop.
    • The pages work at phone, tablet and desktop sizes without sideways scrolling.
    • The pages tell your browser they are in English, so a screen reader reads them correctly.

Here is what we have not finished:

    • We have not yet completed a full test using only a keyboard, or a full test with a screen reader. It is on the list and we will update this page with the result.
    • The main colour problems are fixed. A few smaller ones are not. There were six of them, where text sat on a photograph or a background colour without standing out from it clearly enough. All six are now fixed and live on both sites. What is left is smaller: a "Coming soon" label, and the age line on the team cards on the club home page. We know which ones they are and they are next.
    • The menus at the top of the page do not yet announce themselves properly to a screen reader. We are fixing that.
    • We have tested in Chrome. Testing in Safari and Firefox is still to come.
